This weekend turned into a wild one for the gaming industry, largely driven by a single movement that dominated every major showcase: the #WeWantD3 campaign. Following the announcement that Destiny 2 is heading into maintenance mode, content creators, players, and outlets alike began voicing their desire for a Destiny 3 — rather than watching the beloved shooter simply fade away. To make that message impossible to ignore, thousands of players flooded #WeWantD3 across Summer Game Fest, State of Play, and the Xbox Games Showcase. And as if to underline the point, Destiny 2 has now posted its highest concurrent player count since the launch of The Edge of Fate.
Summer Game Fest’s Most Spammed Message Was #WeWantD3
Most Guardians already know the news — Destiny 2 is riding off into the sunset, leaving the Director behind for good. No more expansions, no more major updates. Nothing. The announcement hit the community hard, with veterans and newcomers alike beginning to wonder about a Destiny 3, especially since neither Bungie nor Sony has said a word about it.
With the final update dropping today, Guardians launched the #WeWantD3 movement, which quickly became the most spammed message across Summer Game Fest and State of Play. The goal is simple: get the studio — and more importantly, Sony — to recognize that players don’t want the franchise to die. They want a new entry in the series, because honestly, no other shooter out there combines the raids, lore, story, puzzles, and mechanics that Destiny 2 has built over the years. There’s simply nothing else that fills that void.
But the community didn’t stop at hashtags. Players decided to let their actions do the talking as well, pouring back into the game for one final push during the Monument of Triumph update — the largest update in the game’s history, clocking in at around 17,000 words to cover every addition, adjustment, and change coming in its final chapter.
Destiny 2 Reaches Its Highest Player Count Since The Edge of Fate Launch
As user Mislead reported, Destiny 2 surpassed 100,000 players just 10 minutes after the update went live, with around 150,000 active on Steam at the time of writing. That number actually tops the player count seen at the launch of The Edge of Fate — one of the most controversial expansions in the game’s history.
Content creators and Destiny 2 communities across the board put out calls to action, urging players to log in during this update, break player records, and show Sony just how much love still exists for the franchise. Despite the movement, the hashtag spam, and the flood of returning Guardians — long enough to cause server queues — Sony has yet to say anything in response.
Still, the community isn’t giving up. Many Guardians hope that these actions will send a clear signal to those with the power to greenlight a Destiny 3 — that this is exactly what players want. For now, though, the waiting game begins, as no information about a successor or sequel has surfaced. Only time will tell.
