Father slept while his 2 toddlers slipped out broken door and wandered onto busy road: Police

A southern Kentucky father faces charges after he allegedly fell asleep and let his young children wander onto the shoulder of a busy road.

Jeremiah Grubb, 23, has been charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office announced. He was booked into the Knox County Detention Center.

On Thursday around 11:50 a.m., a sheriff’s office deputy responded to the area of KY 3439 South near Barbourville, Kentucky — a small city situated about 90 miles north of Knoxville, Tennessee.

The deputy was called to the scene after witnesses reported finding two children — ages 2 and 3 — wandering along the side of the busy road “without adult supervision.” According to local Fox affiliate WDKY, the witnesses told authorities they had stayed with the toddlers for roughly 15 minutes before calling 911, the entire time without a parent or guardian anywhere in sight.

One of the children was reportedly partially naked, and the other needed a diaper change. First responders tended to both kids upon arrival.

As deputies investigated, they identified Grubb as the children’s father and learned that he “was asleep” while the children’s mother was at work. Making matters worse, the lock on the door of their home was apparently broken.

The area’s Department of Child Services and emergency personnel responded to the family’s home. After medics examined both children and cleared them, they “were released to a family member,” the sheriff’s office said.

Grubb was arrested and appeared in court for arraignment on Monday. He is no longer listed as an inmate in the Knox County Detention Center.
