A security guard has been sentenced to three years in prison for the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old woman at a nightclub in west suburban Stone Park last year.
Kevin Henley Jr., 35, pled guilty on Monday to one count of involuntary manslaughter in the Zulma Calderon Pacheco case, according to Cook County court documents.
As part of his plea deal, prosecutors dropped three felony firearms charges against him. Cook County Judge Geary Kull condemned Henley to three years in jail. He will gain credit for the more than a year he has spent on electronic monitoring since his arrest.
Stone Park police said a dispute took place inside the Mansion Nightclub, at 3801 W. Lake St., just before 1:40 a.m. on March 8, when Henley pulled out a revolver and shot Pacheco once, killing him.
Pacheco was dancing with her partner and was not involved in the brawl.
According to Henley’s defense attorneys, he was attacked while attempting to prevent women in the club from being molested. He admitted to having a gun, claiming that gang members had been to the club armed and threatened him a few days before.
Pacheco’s family said a Facebook video captured the moment when a man wearing a black shirt and pants fired a gun during a struggle. The family stated that Pacheco was shot in the chest.
Police said Henley should not have been working at Mansion Live nightclub because he was not qualified to act as a security guard or carry a gun.
The lawsuit alleges that Mansion Live did not provide adequate security, did not properly train and supervise security guards, allowed security to carry a concealed firearm and fire it inside the club, and operated the club in a careless and negligent manner. He did not have a FOID card, as required by Illinois law, and he did not receive the minimum 40 hours of training, according to attorney Tim Cavanagh.
