Recreation supervisor in The Villages taken into custody on DUI after crash

A recreation supervisor in The Villages was taken into custody for drunk driving after ramming her SUV into a light pole and seriously damaged it.

Kristen Michelle Wygand, 35, the recreation supervisor at the Sterling Heights Recreation Center, was arrested late Monday night by Sumter County Sheriff’s deputies.

According to the arrest report, at 11:36 p.m., the Sumter County Communications Center received an automated 911 call from Wygand’s OnStar system inside his 2023 Chevrolet Traverse. Deputies rushed to the intersection of County Road 466 and Buena Vista Boulevard, where they discovered an SUV facing south in the eastbound lanes.

The vehicle had been severely damaged, with the entire front driver’s side wheel assembly detached from the suspension. A black light post in the grassy median had been struck and broken into pieces, sending landscaping materials and vehicle debris over the road.

Despite the fact that the airbag deployed, Wygand, the vehicle’s sole occupant, was not hurt. She initially told deputies she had no idea what happened, but subsequently said she swerved to avoid “something” on the road.

Deputies saw a strong stench of alcohol on her breath, bloodshot and glassy eyes, and dilated pupils. Wygand informed deputies that she was coming from a work softball game and had gone to supper at Outback Steakhouse, where she claimed to have had “only one” glass of white wine.

Following poor performance on a battery of field sobriety tests, deputies searched her vehicle and discovered an open, empty 187ml bottle of Sutter Home Sauvignon Blanc wine in the center console.

Wygand was taken to the Sumter County Detention Center, where she gave breath samples that showed.187 and.184 blood alcohol concentration, more than twice the legal limit.

Wygand, originally from New York, now lives in Middleton with her husband and children. According to her professional biography, she has experience in customer service and hospitality and enjoys visiting Disney. She supposedly has a side job as a self-employed Disney travel advisor.

She was arrested on misdemeanor accusations of driving under the influence with a BAC greater than.150 and DUI causing property damage. She was released after paying a $2,000 bond.
