One of two men charged with fatally shooting a 39-year-old man at a southwest Houston shopping mall has been apprehended, while the second suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound as officials attempted to apprehend him.
According to the Houston Police Department, Axzey Mojica, 22, has been charged with murder in Fort Bend County in connection with Sean Bree’s death.
A second suspect, 23-year-old Iddris Umaru, was also charged with murder but died on June 13 after shooting himself as police attempted to capture him.
The investigation began on June 6 at 1 p.m., when Houston police officers responded to a shooting complaint in the parking lot of a strip center in Sugar Land’s 10055 block of Belknap Road.
Officers arrived and saw Bree suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he eventually died of his injuries.
The investigation was undertaken by Houston Police Department Homicide Division Detectives J. Smith and D. Toledo, who identified Umaru and Mojica as persons of interest. After further investigation, detectives identified both individuals as suspects.
Murder accusations were filed against the couple on June 9.
On June 13, officers of the United States Marshals Service Gulf Coast Violent Offender Task Force and the Houston Police Department’s Westside Patrol Crime Suppression Team apprehended the suspects at a shop in the 105 block of West Road.
Authorities said officers sought to detain both guys when Umaru pulled out a weapon and shot himself.
