Philadelphia police are hunting for two men after a ride-hailing app driver was shot during an attempted robbery early Saturday morning.
It occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of Poplar Street in the city’s Fairmount district.
The driver, a 38-year-old woman, was waiting for a passenger when a man tapped a revolver on her vehicle’s driver-side window, according to authorities.
Police stated no words were exchanged before the woman pressed the gas and attempted to drive away. As the car started moving, the gunman fired a shot through the window, striking the driver in the shoulder.
The gunman and another suspect fled westbound toward 29th Street, while the motorist drove in the opposite way and was able to wait for rescue personnel.
An Uber spokeswoman responded to CBS Philadelphia, saying, “This brazen act of assault is profoundly disturbing. We have contacted the motorist to check on their well-being and wish them a complete recovery. We’re ready to assist law enforcement in their inquiry.”
The driver was rushed to Temple University Hospital and is in stable condition after being shot in the left shoulder.
Police identified the suspects as two individuals in their late teens or early twenties dressed in black and wearing masks.
A black Volkswagen SUV with damage to the driver’s side window was stopped at the crime site on Saturday morning.
