An Oregon cattle dog has been hailed for helping save her owner’s life during a winter emergency in the woods.
After 82-year-old Karen Davis went missing near her house in Elmira, her blue heeler, Cami, stayed with her in the cold, kept her warm, and helped bring rescuers to her before conditions became even more deadly.
What happened?
According to Outside, officials issued a notice and began a search in a rural region west of Eugene when Davis did not return from an afternoon stroll with Cami in December.
The search became more urgent because temperatures were forecast to drop into the 30s. Older persons are more prone to hypothermia, especially in cool, wet situations.
After several hours of searching, approximately ten volunteers located Davis.
According to a Facebook post by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Cami accompanied Davis during the hunt. Rescuers discovered Davis awake in undergrowth near the end of a wooded road, with the dog stretched across her legs. “Cami kept her warm and signalled to Lane County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue volunteers as they searched the area,” the post stated.
Davis was treated for hypothermia on the spot before being carried through the undergrowth to an ambulance and sent to the hospital.
