Man taken into custody after customers and staff allegedly fend off attack over food order at near east Indianapolis Popeyes

Police took into custody a man after he allegedly beat a cashier and another customer at a Popeyes on Indianapolis’ near east side because the establishment did not have what he wanted.

According to court filings, the incident occurred on Tuesday, June 23, at the Popeyes in the 3100 block of East Washington Street, near North Rural Street, when a woman contacted 911 to report that a man had just attacked her and fled.

The woman stated that she was inside the store with her son when they noticed the man go up to the counter to purchase meals. According to court filings, she informed officers that he became irate and violently yelled at the woman taking his order because she did not have what he needed.

According to court filings, the woman claims that the man attempted to leap over the counter and grab the cashier.

The woman informed police that the cashier grabbed a broom stick and whacked the man with it as he was hitting her. The woman then said the man attacked her, seizing her throat and throwing her into a Coke machine. According to court filings, the woman’s son spoke up to defend her, causing the man to back away. According to court filings, a manager ran over and knocked the man to the ground.

Court filings also state that the entire incident was caught on security camera footage.

When cops arrived, individuals involved said that the suspected attacker had fled the area, but officers discovered him and apprehended him shortly thereafter. According to court documents, the man was taken to the hospital and arrested for battery with injuries.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the formal charge decision.
