A woman was shot and killed on Friday afternoon in the Humboldt Park neighborhood after a confrontation turned violent, according to witnesses and police.
Police said the incident occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Chicago and Homan avenues, when a physical altercation broke out in traffic before shooting erupted.
Investigators say a 27-year-old woman pulled out a revolver during the dispute and shot a 36-year-old woman several times in the chest. The woman was sent to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she eventually died.
Witness Dave Sartore stated that he did not instantly grasp what was going on. “I didn’t assume it was shots until I got, maybe, like, real close, like, right here, and I was seeing someone not moving, lying in the streets.”
The site was marked by crime tape and evidence markers scattered over the road, emphasizing the brutality that had occurred in broad daylight.
Sartore also discussed the aftermath. “Just screaming, crying, and hugging a dead body.”
Another witness, José Ramos, stated that the altercation looked to start as a driving rage incident. “I overheard people arguing. So I turned around and saw two girls who were about to get physical. Then one girl and another guy started shouting. Then the guy entered, and I heard another lady’s voice. The next thing you know, it’s pow, pow, pow.
As part of their response, investigators focused on two vehicles that had stopped in the middle of the street.
According to Sartore, the violence was particularly startling due to its location and timing. “But, right there in the middle of the street in the middle of the day, yeah, that is very strange.”
Ramos expressed frustration over the situation. “We have to alter this, man. “This is really bad.”
Police said the alleged shooter was apprehended at the scene, where officers also found a handgun. Charges remained pending as of Friday evening.
