A 6-year-old student was killed after being hit by a school bus on Tuesday in Frankfort, Illinois.
Around 3:24 p.m., Frankfort police responded to the 500 block of Aberdeen Road for a traffic collision between a school bus and a pedestrian.
Officers discovered the girl unresponsive and suffering from significant injuries. Police said first responders tried life-saving procedures and transported the child to a nearby hospital for treatment, where he was subsequently pronounced dead. The child was recognized by Cook County medical examiners as Jenna Menias of Frankfort.
The girl attended Frankfort School District 157-C. In a statement, the district wrote, in part, “We understand that an event of this sort has a significant impact on our whole school community. We urge kids who are concerned or distressed to contact a trusted adult, teacher, social worker, or another member of our school support team. Frankfort School District 157-C and Lincoln Way Transportation are cooperating with the Frankfort Police Department and the Will County Sheriff’s Office to examine the matter.”
On Tuesday evening, CBS SkyWatch flew above Aberdeen Road and Heather Lane, where skid marks and a pink rucksack were indicated by cones in the road.
According to police, the school bus was carrying several other people at the time of the incident. No additional injuries were recorded, and the students have already been reunited with their family.
