Tony Corso, 65, of Fayette County, was presented with a $1 million commemorative check Thursday at a Walmart in South Union Township for winning the top Powerball prize in the July 25 drawing.
Corso bought the winning ticket at the pharmacy while picking up a prescription for his wife after her recent heart attack.
The Powerball jackpot had reached $600 million when Corso decided to buy $20 worth of tickets during his pharmacy appointment.
The Pennsylvania Lottery’s proceeds go toward subsidizing programs for elder state residents, such as transportation, care services, pharmaceutical assistance, and senior centers.
Corso retired in May after running a small tire business. He purchased $20 in Powerball tickets while leaving Walmart drugstore.I was there to pick up my wife’s prescription. “She recently had a heart attack,” Corso explained. He stated that he normally plays the lottery only when the jackpot sums increase. “I like to play when the jackpot gets big,” he replied.
When Corso checked his tickets the next Sunday morning, one showed a suggestion to see a clerk.Corso remarked, ‘That’s unusual. He kept the ticket on his counter until Monday, when he and his wife checked the numbers online at palottery.com. “She started saying, ‘I can’t breathe!'” Corso recalled. “Then she said, ‘Well, I think you’re a millionaire!'”
Corso prioritizes his family, noting that his wife’s birthday falls on September 11th. To me, her life is more essential,” Corso stated. He explained that the surprise prize will help with their family preparations. “I didn’t actually need the money. But it feels nice to have it,” Corso remarked, adding, “This reward will enable my wife to totally retire.” Corso hopes to spend time with his seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
