Martin County man wins $1 million with taxes covered in new game

Ralph Mizelle of Williamston attempted the $1,000,000 Taxes Paid scratch‑off game and secured the first $1.38 million top prize. He purchased the winning $10 ticket at Jamesville Mini Mart on N.C. 64 in Jamesville, where the odds of winning were 1 in 1.85 million.

On Monday, Mizelle reported to the lottery headquarters to claim his prize. State and federal tax withholdings were deducted from the total amount, allowing him to leave with a net win of $1 million.

The $1,000,000 Taxes Paid scratch‑off series launched this month with three $1.38 million prizes; two of those prizes remain unclaimed.

Martin County received a $62 million grant funded by the lottery to construct a new high school, illustrating the impact of lottery‑generated revenue on the community.
