A West Memphis man has been sentenced to slightly more than eight years in federal prison after being arrested for a 2023 shooting.
According to the West Memphis Police Department, Jaylen Atkins, 21, was sentenced to 103 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to a 2024 federal indictment. The sentencing occurred on Wednesday.
Atkins is the suspect in a December 2023 shooting that injured one guy and left a child “shot multiple times.” According to West Memphis Police, witnesses described the gunshots as “rapid.”
Investigators apparently discovered video evidence indicating that the gun used in the shooting had been modified with an illegal switch. Switches enable guns to operate as automatic weapons.
According to West Memphis Police, weeks after the incident, Atkins led officers on a “high-speed” chase. According to West Memphis Police, the chase came to an end when Atkin’s car was “disabled” near Missouri Street and the West Service Road.
Atkins apparently fled the scene on foot, but cops apprehended him shortly thereafter. When West Memphis Police arrested Atkins, they discovered a revolver with a switch.
The West Memphis Police Department characterized this case as a “strong collaboration” among the department, the ATF, and the US Attorney’s Office.
