Police detained a 28-year-old woman in Kansas City on a military desertion allegation from Fort Riley.
According to Jackson County Circuit Court documents, Mary C. Brewer is facing a court martial after being charged with abandoning her position.
According to court documents, Brewer was arrested on a warrant issued by Fort Riley Military Post in Geary County, Kansas.
Brewer was ordered by Jackson County Judge Joel P. Fahnestock to be sent back to Fort Riley to stand judgment.
According to military law, desertion punishments vary from dishonorable discharge to incarceration.
During warfare, the crime can result in the death penalty, though this has not occurred since 1945.
“The 1ST Infantry Division will cooperate with regional law enforcement and remain compliant with the Uniform Code of Military Justice through this investigation,” an Army spokesperson told KCTV.
Brewer was still in the Jackson County Detention Center on a military hold as of Wednesday evening, Nov. 5.
