Victoria Sorocean was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on November 4, 2025, in Los Angeles, California. Sorocean, a Moldovan national, was wanted in Moldova for a murder that occurred in 2013. She and another person were found guilty of torturing and killing a victim in Chisinau, Moldova. Sorocean was sentenced to 17 years in prison and later fled to the United States.

ICE first apprehended Sorocean in January 2020. She was released in 2022, following multiple court appeals and an asylum request. Some officials have protested the release, claiming it allows a person convicted of a major crime to remain in the nation.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, 70% of ICE arrests include noncitizens who have been prosecuted or convicted of crimes in the United States, excluding foreign fugitives. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin remarked on the case, emphasizing the gravity of Sorocean’s sentence.

Sorocean is currently in ICE custody and will be jailed for the duration of his removal hearings. The case has reignited debate over immigration enforcement and the treatment of international fugitives in the United States.
