CLEVELAND, Ohio – The suspect shot by a state trooper near Case Western Reserve University this week after a car chase has a long criminal history, court records show.
The chase and shooting prompted the campus’s second shelter-in-place order in four months.
Authorities said Leon Terrell, 18, and Noreonna Echols, 19, sped away in a 2025 Kia K4 without license plates when a trooper tried to pull them over around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Troopers used road spikes to stop the vehicle, forcing the pair to flee and attempt two carjackings—a Cadillac and a Chevy SUV—at gunpoint.
Troopers confronted Terrell near Tomlinson Hall on Martin Luther King Drive, where an officer shot him in the leg, according to the patrol. He received treatment for the leg injury and was later released.
Echols faces aggravated robbery charges and remains in custody on a \$300,000 bond. Terrell is expected to face similar charges, though none have been filed yet.
Court records reveal Terrell’s history of criminal accusations in several Cuyahoga County cities since 2022.
Cleveland police charged him in May 2024 with receiving stolen property, obstruction of justice, and weapons violations.
Previous incidents span multiple jurisdictions, including Fairview Park and Euclid, with allegations ranging from handling stolen property to assault and criminal trespassing.
This week’s chase marked the second near the campus in four months. On April 11, four armed youths fled a car crash on Cedar Road.
According to police, one of them entered Michelson House by following a student inside. Authorities later found him hiding in a janitor’s closet. Campus officials again ordered students to remain in their rooms while police searched for the suspects.
