A New Mexico man was sentenced to 262 months in prison by a federal judge in El Paso on Wednesday for trafficking about 1.5 kilos of fentanyl.
According to court records, Edgar Omar Martinez, 43, of Anthony, was detained on March 14 after FBI officers discovered about 17,000 fentanyl pills in his vehicle. Martinez acquired the tablets from a co-conspirator two weeks before the seizure and was expecting to be paid $3,200 for his role in the drug trafficking conspiracy, according to additional research.
Martinez was charged on April 9 with one count of possessing with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl and one count of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl. On August 26, he entered a guilty plea to both charges. The case was presided over by US District Judge Leon Schydlower.
