A New Jersey man was sentenced in Luzerne County Court for trafficking heroin and disarming a Pennsylvania State Police trooper during a traffic stop in Wilkes-Barre in 2024.
Malik Amir Monroe, 45, of Irvington, was sentenced by Judge David W. Lupas to one year, eight months to five years in prison for possession with intent to supply a controlled narcotic and disarming a law enforcement officer. Monroe pled guilty to the charges on February 26.
The criminal complaint states:
On February 15, 2024, a state trooper stopped Monroe’s four-door Buick with tinted windows when she was driving on the North Cross Valley Expressway. During the traffic stop, the trooper discovered a bulge in Monroe’s waistband while conducting a pat-down check.
According to the complaint, Monroe began a struggle and knocked a Taser from the trooper’s hand before fleeing into the woods and being arrested.
According to the complaint, a police canine tracked Monroe’s flight path and discovered 53 heroin packets that he had dumped.
