Two Marion residents are facing several felony charges after investigators say a substantial quantity of fentanyl was discovered during a traffic stop earlier this month.
According to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, deputies made a traffic stop on Jan. 4, 2026, for a traffic violation. Patrick Ryan Poteat, 34, drove the vehicle, while Amanda Dawn Boone, 31, was the passenger.
Authorities reported that a K-9 officer and deputies searched the vehicle and discovered 12.71 grams of fentanyl. Boone is also accused of having drug paraphernalia.
Boone and Poteat are facing a number of felony charges, including possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, two counts of fentanyl trafficking, maintaining a vehicle, dwelling, or place for a controlled substance, and possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance.
Ricky T. Buchanan stated in a written statement that the seizure emphasizes the significance of proactive law enforcement actions. “Removing fentanyl from our streets saves lives,” Buchanan stated. “Every seizure like this protects families and prevents another potential overdose in our community.”
According to the sheriff’s office, Boone and Poteat have each been awarded $240,000 in secured bonds. The case is still under investigation.
