A Pennsylvania woman suspected of neglecting her dogs has been prosecuted after police claim she dumped them in the woods.
According to the complaint, Tammy Auman, 54, was being investigated for animal mistreatment after authorities arrived at a home in Milesburg Borough and saw many canines living in horrible and unclean conditions. Auman, who was not home at the time, was proven to be the dogs’ owner. When police interrogated her later, she said she gave her dogs to her daughter.
The Clinton County SPCA’s Facebook post in late December tipped off police. The person who sent the message thought the dogs belonged to Auman.
When police arrived to question Auman, she allegedly acknowledged to abandoning the five dogs in the woods. According to authorities, Auman spent several hours driving around until abandoning the dogs in a forested location north of Lock Haven.
As of Wednesday, January 14, three of the five dogs had been reported as found. Police were able to collect images of one of the found dogs, claiming it was extremely underweight and had a facial injury from porcupine quills.
Police say their investigation revealed that Auman purposely abandoned her pets in a remote region in frigid weather, resulting in protracted suffering, bodily harm, and a risk of significant bodily injury or death.
Auman is charged with five misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty and five summary counts of animal abuse. She is now awaiting a preliminary hearing planned for February 25.
