Two men from southern Maryland have been charged in connection with a theft and property damage incident at a grocery store in Indian Head, according to court records.
Police identified the suspects as Darmarius Leon Smothers, 36, of Accokeek, and Kurt Douglas Woods, 40, of Bryans Road. According to the charging paperwork, the incident took place on January 19, 2026, at the Oasis Fresh Foods Market on Indian Head Highway.
According to a probable cause statement, deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office were summoned to the store following a complaint of a theft in progress. Store staff said that product was taken without payment. Police eventually discovered that the stolen goods were damaged and hence unsellable.
Deputies identified suspects who matched the descriptions provided nearby. Investigators claim Woods failed to comply with authorized deputies’ directions and sought to leave on foot before being apprehended. Smothers was also apprehended and detained during the investigation.
Authorities found that the entire value of the stolen merchandise was less than $100, and the damage to shop property was valued at less than $1,000. The retrieved articles were declared unsellable and hence could not be returned to inventory.
Smothers was charged with larceny under $100 and malicious destruction under $1,000, both misdemeanors. Woods faces three misdemeanor charges: theft of property worth less than $100, malicious destruction of property worth less than $1,000, and disobedience to obey a reasonable and lawful order.
According to court documents, after being arrested, Smothers was released on his own recognizance. Following a bail review hearing on Jan. 20, Woods was freed on his own recognizance after first being held on a percentage bond.
Both men are set for a trial-related officer scheduling hearing in Charles County District Court on March 6th.
