The death of an incarcerated man at California State Prison, Sacramento, is being investigated as a homicide, with both the victim and his cellmate initially taken into state custody from Los Angeles County, according to correctional officials.
According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, staff personnel discovered jailed person John Cisneros, 49, unresponsive inside his cell at 9:15 p.m. on February 23.
Prison staff immediately began life-saving measures and dialed 911, but Cisneros was pronounced dead at 9:59 p.m. by responding medical personnel.
Following the discovery, authorities detained and removed Cisneros’ cellmate, 34-year-old Irvin Sanchez. According to officials, Sanchez has been placed in restricted housing pending the outcome of the investigation.
According to CDCR, both males were admitted to state prison from Los Angeles County.
Cisneros was most recently released on July 6, 2015, after serving a five-year sentence for second-degree robbery. While incarcerated, he was sentenced to 28 years in Los Angeles County in October 2017 for penetration, oral copulation, and attempted rape using force, violence, or fear of immediate bodily harm.
Sanchez was arrested in Los Angeles County on February 27, 2013, and is currently serving an 18-year sentence for attempted second-degree murder with gang and firearm enhancements, as well as a concurrent term for concealing a firearm in a car.
The death is being investigated by both the prison’s Investigative Services Unit and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. Officials have not revealed any other details about Cisneros’ death.
