Indianapolis man apprehended after allegedly drug dealing in Lugar Plaza

A man was detained for allegedly trafficking drugs in downtown Indianapolis and having an outstanding warrant in Johnson County.

According to the IMPD, detectives from the Downtown Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) were in and around Lugar Plaza Park, situated on East Washington Street, on February 27 as part of “ongoing enforcement efforts.”

Police said they were at the park when they noticed a “suspected hand-to-hand drug deal.”

IMPD said detectives continued to follow the alleged drug dealer—later identified as David Gale, 38, of Indianapolis—as he entered a building across the street.

Police said they discovered Gale in a restroom stall. When police requested Gale to get out of the stall, he refused, so cops hauled him out and handcuffed him.

According to IMPD, officers discovered 17 grams of suspected drug paraphernalia in Gale’s backpack. Detectives think the amount of Spice discovered may cause 68 persons to become inebriated,” the IMPD Downtown District stated in a social media post.

Gale was arrested for this event as well as an outstanding warrant from Johnson County. He was accused of both dealing and possessing a controlled narcotic.

According to IMPD, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office also filed a motion for more than normal bond and a notice of intent to pursue the chronic offender sentence enhancement. The judge granted the higher-than-standard bond motion and ordered a $480,000, 10% cash bond.

“I’m extremely proud of the diligent work our detectives continue to put into keeping Downtown Indianapolis safe,” said IMPD Downtown District Commander Shane Foley. “Their actions, together with our close collaboration with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, indicate our shared commitment to combating illegal activities in and surrounding Lugar Plaza Park. We will continue our targeted enforcement efforts to protect everyone who lives, works, or visits our Downtown neighborhood.”

Gale’s jury trial is slated for May 11, at 8:30 a.m.
