A York County woman was drunk and driving in the wrong direction during a three-vehicle crash last month on Route 283 in East Hempfield Township that resulted in her death and injured a Pennsylvania state trooper and an Allentown man, according to state police.
Cpl. Ryan E. DeHaven, 28, and Joniel Toribio, 30, were rushed to Lancaster General Hospital with suspected significant injuries after the Feb. 21 crash that killed 48-on-year-old Heather C. Bare, state police announced late Tuesday night.
According to the police report, Bare had a blood alcohol concentration of at least 0.16 percent. The legal limit in Pennsylvania is 0.08%.
Toribio was a passenger in the unmarked police SUV, a 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by DeHaven.
DeHaven, of Lancaster’s Troop J in East Lampeter Township, joined the state police in 2019 and was elevated to the rank of corporal in January.
LGH and state police did not respond to a request for information regarding the men’s conditions on Wednesday morning. State police declined to disclose whether the crash inquiry was still ongoing.
State police said the crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Route 283 east near Landisville. Bare’s 2026 Mercedes-Benz C-Class was driving west in the eastbound lane when it collided with a Life Lion EMS ambulance before colliding head on with the Tahoe.
DeHaven, Toribio, and Bare were stuck in their vehicles until they were rescued and transported to LGH, where Bare died, according to state police. The EMS staff in the 2014 Ford E-350 ambulance were not wounded and remained on the scene to assist DeHaven, Toribio, and Bare.
