COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Franklin County Coroner’s Office has released the autopsy report for a man who died after a police-involved shooting at a private bar in north Columbus last month.
On the night of March 31, officers with the Columbus Division of Police responded to a report of a man with a gun at Moose Lodge 1427 on Schrock Road.
Police said the man, identified as 38-year-old Robert Gordon, approached the entrance of the private bar and demanded to be let in despite not being a member. Dispatchers received a 911 call reporting that he had a gun and had fired it. No injuries were reported.
Lodge staff told Gordon to leave. According to staff members, the situation quickly escalated as he moved toward the exit.
Additional 911 calls reported that he fired a shot outside the building and was “pointing a gun at everybody,” police said.
Officers arrived at the scene and found Gordon pacing in the parking lot with a gun held to his head. They repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon, but he did not comply.
Police said a gunshot rang out, prompting three officers to fire their weapons at Gordon, striking him multiple times.
The autopsy report states that Gordon died from a gunshot wound to his head, and his manner of death was ruled a suicide.
The report further explains that Gordon shot himself during his encounter with officers, while law enforcement fired several additional shots that were not lethal. The coroner noted that officers struck Gordon 10 times, but those wounds did not hasten his death.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called in to investigate the shooting.
