Indiana State Police are investigating a major crash that left one woman in critical condition and five others injured. According to ISP, the crash was caused by a woman escaping from police on Interstate 65 Saturday morning.
According to ISP, a Versailles District trooper attempted to stop a driver driving a gray Chevrolet Equinox on I-65 northbound near mile marker 75. According to state police, the stops were made due to speeding and fraudulent license plate information.
Nicole Bryant, 25, was booked and photographed by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver, later identified as 25-year-old Nicole Bryant of Indianapolis, refused to stop when authorities attempted to pull her over. A police pursuit then commenced.
Bryant led cops on a nearly 25-mile chase into Johnson County, and as she approached mile marker 99, she turned to the shoulder of the road in an attempt to overtake vehicles. According to state police, Bryant impacted another vehicle while pulling onto the shoulder, resulting in a chain-reaction crash. Four automobiles were involved in the incident.
A woman in one of the vehicles involved in the incident is said to be in critical condition. She was treated with three tourniquets by first responders before being transferred to a local hospital. The woman is currently thought to be in critical but stable condition.
Five additional people were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Bryant was taken into custody by police before being brought to a local hospital via ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.
She faces preliminary accusations of resisting law enforcement, a level 3 felony; reckless driving, a level 6 felony; and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a level 4 felony.
I-65 northbound was stopped for many hours as crews cleaned up the wreckage. The ISP is still actively investigating the accident.
Bryant’s court appearance date is now unknown, according to online court records.
