Pittsburgh Area Under Flood Watches Amid Heavy Rainfall

Any Alert Days Ahead? Today is a First Alert Weather Day because of the flood threat. Saturated ground, combined with training storms, will raise the risk of flash flooding throughout the day.

Take note: Morgantown, West Virginia, remains under a Flood Watch through 10 p.m. tonight after receiving more than 2.25 inches of rain over the last 10 days.

Many communities along and south of I-70 have dealt with significant rainfall over the past week and a half. Morgantown, for instance, has picked up just over 2.25 inches of rain in the past nine days. With another inch or more of rainfall possible today, flash flooding and minor river flooding could develop, prompting the Flood Watch through 10 p.m. for most areas south of I-70. Wheeling has also recorded more than 3 inches of rain during the past week.

By the time you read this, the heaviest rain of the day will likely have already passed, but scattered showers will continue through the rest of the morning from Cranberry southward. South of I-70, scattered rain chances are expected to linger through at least 4 p.m. this afternoon. Flash flooding can develop in as little as six hours after heavy rain moves through. Because flash flooding happens rapidly and remains one of the deadliest weather hazards, drivers should avoid flooded roads and steer clear of areas known to flood whenever possible.

Rain will not last very long today, and most areas north of I-70 should stay dry by this afternoon. After today, the forecast looks dry for the next several days. A weather pattern known as a “blocking high” is expected to keep rain away while maintaining mostly clear skies. Right now, forecasters expect this ridge of high pressure to remain in place through at least Sunday before weakening enough for rain chances to slowly return to the forecast. Although dry conditions will continue through the rest of the week, temperatures may not be warm enough for ideal pool weather, with highs mainly reaching the mid to upper 70s.

As for today, temperatures will climb into the mid-70s after the rainy start. Those readings will likely stay close to the daytime highs expected through the remainder of the week.

Unlike the rest of the week, this afternoon will stay mostly cloudy, and there is still a slight chance for a brief passing shower. Temperatures around noon are expected to sit in the low 70s, with light and variable winds continuing through the day.
