Rockville Attorney Sentenced in $4.2M Theft, Fraud Scheme

In Montgomery County Circuit Court, the Honorable John Maloney sentenced Sari Kurland, also known as Sari Bloch, to 80 years in prison, with all but 13 years suspended, followed by five years of supervised probation.

As part of his sentence, Kurland was sentenced to pay over $4.2 million in reparations to victims. In January, Kurland pleaded guilty to one count of theft over $100,000 and 15 counts of misappropriation by a fiduciary.

According to authorities, Kurland, a former Maryland attorney with a Rockville law office, perpetrated three fraudulent schemes between May 2022 and September 2024, resulting in 21 victims and more than $4.2 million in losses. Prosecutors said one plan entailed seeking short-term financing for what they portrayed as a Middle Eastern petroleum deal with extraordinarily high profits. Another featured cryptocurrency transaction in which victims transferred funds to Kurland’s attorney escrow account. A third case involves a business owner who retained Kurland for bankruptcy-related legal services and supplied settlement cash, which authorities allege were transferred elsewhere.

Robert Hill and John Lalos, assistant state attorneys, prosecuted the case. John McCarthy claimed Kurland misused her position of trust as an attorney and fiduciary by mismanaging millions of funds entrusted to her by clients and investors. Officials praised the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission and the State’s Attorney’s Office Special Prosecutions Division for their examination of the matter.
