A Phoenix man is facing murder charges after reportedly following his pregnant teenage girlfriend from Arizona to San Diego and shooting her, according to authorities.
The victim’s baby was delivered via emergency cesarean section, but the mother died from her injuries, according to the San Diego Police Department.
Around 1:10 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to multiple 911 callers reporting a shooting in San Diego’s Bay Park neighborhood, near Mission Bay, and discovered a 17-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the head, according to police.
The suspect, Trevon Williams, 21, allegedly fled to a nearby canyon after the shooting, but police discovered him and apprehended him at 3 a.m. Police say they recovered a semiautomatic weapon during the arrest.
The victim’s name was not released by police, but her family spoke with Phoenix TV station ABC15 and identified her as Jariah Edwards.
Police claimed the teen was approximately 32 weeks pregnant. According to ABC15, the baby is being treated in the intensive care unit at a San Diego hospital.
Pregnant teen killed during family trip
Edwards had flown from Arizona to San Diego with family members and was staying in a vacation rental. Williams allegedly made the same trip alone and met Edwards outside the rental before shooting her, according to authorities.
Williams was placed into a San Diego County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and two weapons counts. He is ineligible for bail, according to jail records.
Edwards’ family launched a GoFundMe page to cover the cost of her burial and the baby’s medical expenses.
“Her passing has left a hole in the hearts of her mother, sister, family, friends, and, most importantly, her newborn baby girl, who is now fighting for her life,” the campaign website states.
