Two South Side teenagers face significant charges after Chicago police say they pulled a gun on a 63-year-old man and stole his car, only to be apprehended in less than a day in the South Shore neighborhood.
On Thursday, officers arrested an 18-year-old man named Allen Johnson and a 16-year-old boy, according to authorities. Investigators say the couple was apprehended in South Shore less than 24 hours after the suspected hijacking, a turnaround that police are hailing as another rapid victory in their citywide anti-carjacking campaign.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, Johnson and the 16-year-old allegedly stole the victim’s vehicle at gunpoint in the 7900 block of South Jeffery Boulevard. The suspects were later apprehended on the 2300 block of East 79th Street in South Shore. Johnson is charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, aggravated vehicular hijacking with a weapon, and armed robbery, while the juvenile faces charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon in a vehicle by a person under 21, according to police.
The Chicago Police Department congratulated its Citywide Robbery Task Force for identifying the culprits and arresting them in under 24 hours. According to the Chicago Police Department, the task force uses coordinated patrols, surveillance equipment, and cross-district collaboration to track down stolen automobiles and identify suspects. Detectives said the same strategies were used here.
Aggravated vehicular hijacking is classified as a Class X felony in Illinois, making it one of the most serious offenses. Penalties increase when the victim is 60 or older, which might result in a longer sentence. According to the Illinois Compiled Statutes, the charges Johnson faces could result in significant jail terms. Prosecutors may seek adult court treatment for adolescents charged of firearm-enhanced hijacking under 705 ILCS 405 §5-130. These statutory alternatives guide how prosecutors and judges handle both defendants as the cases progress.
Johnson was set to appear in court for a detention hearing on Friday. FOX 32 Chicago reports that police have not provided any other details regarding the 63-year-old victim’s condition. The 16-year-old’s case is presently being handled in juvenile court, but prosecutors may attempt to transfer him to adult court under the stated statutes.
Officials said the arrests illustrate the department’s continued effort to combat car hijackings and armed robberies this year, which is led by the Robbery Task Force’s coordinated operations. In recent public statements, the Chicago Police Department cited similar multi-district crackdowns as critical to promptly identifying offenders and eradicating patterns of citywide robberies and carjackings.
