El Paso boxer Kayla Gomez was taken into custody Saturday when Anthony police allege she assaulted a family member during a family gathering.
According to the Anthony Police Department, officers arrived at the 600 block of Celeste in Anthony shortly after receiving a report of a domestic dispute. According to investigators, Gomez got into an argument with a family member that turned aggressive.
Police say Gomez struck the victim many times, causing visible injuries. Emergency medical personnel evaluated the victim at the site, but he rejected being sent to a hospital.
Following the investigation, Gomez was arrested on a charge of assault causing bodily injury – family violence and put into the El Paso County Jail on a $2,500 bond.
According to El Paso County Jail records, Gomez was freed on July 5 after posting a surety bail.
Gomez is one of El Paso’s most successful young boxers. She qualified for the United States Olympic boxing squad in 2021, was honored with a City of El Paso proclamation establishing May 24 as Kayla Gomez Day in 2022, and just made her professional boxing debut after taking a break from the sport due to the birth of her kid.
