A man who missed out on a gig as an Uber driver due to his suspended license was apprehended last week near the Saluki Recreation Center in The Villages.
On Thursday morning, a Wildwood Police Department officer saw Edward Ellison Williams, 36, of Leesburg, driving a blue Chevrolet Tahoe near the intersection of Central Parkway and Marsh Bend Trail. The officer observed the vehicle’s Georgia license plate, which had expired in May.
During the traffic encounter, Williams turned over a Florida driver’s license and quickly revealed that the Tahoe was not insured. He also confessed that his tag had expired.
When dispatch confirmed that Williams’ license had been suspended indefinitely in July for failing to pay four traffic penalties in Lake County, he stated he was already aware of his driving situation.
According to the arrest record, Williams informed the officer that he knew his license was suspended since he had recently applied for a job with Uber and was specifically denied the position due to his suspended license. He told officers that he had asked the Lake County Clerk of Court for an extension on his citations but had never cleared them up.
Williams was arrested on misdemeanor charges of driving while suspended and failing to maintain motor vehicle liability insurance. He also received a ticket for the expired tag.
He was booked into the Sumter County Detention Center and later released after paying a $1,000 bond.
