A woman in Indiana allegedly crossed the center line of a road and slammed into a man in an electric wheelchair, killing him, authorities say.
Kandice Baker, 45, faces charges of causing death while driving intoxicated and possessing 5 to 10 grams of methamphetamine, according to Allen County court records reviewed by Law&Crime.
The Allen County Coroner’s Office identified the man Baker allegedly killed as 63-year-old David James Keen, according to area CBS affiliate WANE.
On Monday at around 10 p.m., Baker was driving an SUV west on East Coliseum Boulevard in Fort Wayne, according to law enforcement. Keen was also in the area in his electric wheelchair.
Authorities said Keen was “traveling down the middle of the roadway” when Baker allegedly crossed the center line and struck him “from behind.”
The Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the crash site, where the SUV had front-end damage and the wheelchair was lying on its side. Keen was unconscious, and despite receiving care from medics, he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
Officers said Baker was hyperactive at the scene, according to local CBS affiliate WKRC. She apparently told authorities she had smoked marijuana about two hours before the crash, and investigators reportedly found a small plastic bag containing about seven grams of meth.
Police said they did not believe speed contributed to the crash. Baker was arrested, booked into the Allen County Jail and scheduled to undergo a drug recognition test.
She is scheduled to appear in Allen County Superior Court on Sept. 21.
