A woman who was initially accused of attempting to murder a Chicago police officer during an encounter on the South Side in 2023 pled guilty to a lesser crime and was sentenced to seven years.
Resendez, 41, was charged with attempted murder in relation to the September 2, 2023, incident in the 9900 block of South Ewing. However, officials have never publicly accused her of firing directly at the officers. The confrontation was captured on both cops’ body cams, as well as a city security camera.
The COPA video, released at the conclusion of this piece, shows Resendez and another individual walking along the middle of the street before stepping to the sidewalk as a CPD squad car approaches.
The cops drove beside Resendez for a short distance before exiting the squad car to speak with her.
Resendez turned and pointed a handgun toward the officer as one officer instructed her, “Let me see your hands,” according to the officer’s bodycam video. Two bullets were then heard, leading the officers to seek cover. The video does not show who fired the bullets, but CPD reported that Resendez “produced a firearm and later admitted to pulling the trigger in the direction of a Chicago Police officer.”
According to a preliminary statement from COPA, Resendez “turned and pointed a firearm in the direction of the officers” and “both officers then discharged their firearms.”
According to prosecutors, police found Resendez’s phone, a revolver, and a can with her fingerprints along the route she followed after the confrontation, allowing them to identify her. She was captured many weeks later.
Resendez pled guilty on Thursday to attempted aggravated discharge of a firearm into an occupied car in exchange for a seven-year sentence from Judge James Obbish, according to court documents. The accusation of attempted discharge may explain why both CPD and COPA avoided stating that Resendez’s gun discharged when she pulled the trigger.
She has 1,593 days of credit from her three years in the Cook County Jail. That credit will count toward her sentence.
