An 18-year-old student at The Villages High School was detained after a check of his vehicle on campus revealed marijuana and homemade smoking devices.
Jackson Ray Rice, who resides in the Twisted Oaks neighborhood in Wildwood, was brought to the attention of a school deputy by VHS staff at 10 a.m. Thursday for possessing a nicotine vape. The encounter prompted school administrators to perform a precautionary search of his vehicle, which was parked on campus in Middleton.
When the administrators unlocked the vehicle, they instantly noticed the whiff of marijuana. The deputy, using his training and experience, confirmed the odor and took over the search. Inside the top of the center console, the deputy discovered a small metal tin holding a partly burned marijuana cigarette and two little lumps of a green leafy material. The substance field tested positive for marijuana.
As the deputy searched the center console further, he uncovered two plastic bottles that had been modified and manufactured into a makeshift bong and pipe smoking equipment. In addition, the bottles tested positive for marijuana.
Rice was arrested for misdemeanor possession of marijuana (less than 20 grams) and drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the Sumter County Detention Center, where he was held on $1,000 bond.
