4 people shot at Columbus Park after report of fight on party bus

Four people were shot, two critically, during a gathering in the parking lot of Columbus Park on the West Side early Sunday, following reports of a fight aboard a party bus.

Chicago police issued a brief statement on the incident that did not name the park as the location. According to the statement, a 45-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk when an SUV came beside him and someone inside opened fire, injuring him many times. The remaining casualties were later transported to local hospitals, according to CPD.

According to law enforcement officials and CPD radio broadcasts, many cars and a party bus were gathered in the Columbus Park parking lot in the 600 block of South Central Avenue when someone began firing approximately 2:27 a.m. At least one caller indicated that a brawl had broken out on the party bus prior to the shooting.

An officer analyzing security tape reported seeing automobiles accelerate away from the scene before police arrived.

Officers discovered a 39-year-old lady with a gunshot wound to her chest and a 45-year-old guy with gunshot wounds to his chest and lower limbs. The woman was discovered at the scene, while the guy was recovered on the outward approach to the Eisenhower Expressway. Both were listed as in critical condition.

According to CPD, the other casualties included a 30-year-old guy wounded in the neck and left shoulder, as well as a 28-year-old man shot twice in the face.

Officers also discovered a weapon in bushes near where one of the victims was shot. Six shell casings were found, according to police radio communications.

Over the weekend, Chicago experienced its second mass shooting, which is defined as four or more individuals being shot in a single occurrence.

The first happened around 11:13 p.m. Friday in the 4000 block of West 26th Street, when police said a drive-by shooter in a white car opened fire on four males as they exited a building. The vehicle fled southbound on Pulaski Road. The victims, aged 56, 26, 25, and 19, were wounded in the extremities but were believed to be in fair health.
