A Wildwood woman armed with a kitchen knife was detained after a violent confrontation with her husband at the Wildwood Preserve Apartments on Powell Road.
Tanyeika Delise Durant, 42, faces felony charges for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated violence with a deadly weapon after being arrested on Halloween night.
According to the Wildwood Police Department’s arrest record, officers rushed to the apartment complex at 7044 Homestead Loop at 6:30 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from Durant’s husband.
The husband informed dispatchers that his wife assaulted him with a knife and hit him in the back of the head, so he punched her in the mouth in self-defence.
Durant stated that the fight began when her husband accused her of drinking all day after work. She claimed he punched her in the mouth and slapped her repeatedly while she curled up on their bed. She claims he departed the apartment when her buddy arrived.
However, her husband described a different series of events. He claimed Durant threw him onto their bed during an altercation about her drinking. When Durant attempted to leave the bedroom to avoid more escalation, he allegedly blocked the door. He pushed by her, grabbed his bags, and walked for the front door.
He claimed Durant dashed into the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and lunged at him. He punched her in the face in self-defence, but she allegedly charged at him again while he was attempting to unlock the front door. While his back was turned, he felt something hit the back of his head. When he turned around, he noticed Durant lower the knife. He escaped to the parking lot and dialled 911.
Officers discovered a fresh cut on the back of the husband’s skull and scratch marks on the shoulder. Durant had a swelling, wounded lip. A friend and the couple’s daughter, who were present at the apartment but did not see the physical altercation, offered testimonies that agreed with the husband’s timeline.
Police determined Durant’s assertions contradicted the witnesses’ testimonies and physical evidence, identifying her as the principal aggressor. The couple has been married for sixteen years.
Durant was booked into the Sumter County Detention Centre. She is being held without bond because she is on active probation for a previous aggravated assault conviction in Georgia.
