A 42-year-old Salvadoran national wanted in his home country for violent offenses was apprehended on Long Island after authorities learned he lived just steps away from a middle school, federal officials said.

On September 3, Homeland Security Investigations New York apprehended Jamie Manual Perez Perez during a vehicle stop in Brentwood, with the help of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations and US Customs and Border Protection.

An Interpol Red Notice was issued in El Salvador for Perez Perez, an alleged MS-13 gang associate, based on allegations of aggravated extortion and making threats to injure a person.

This alleged MS-13 associate resided mere feet from school property and went about his life virtually unchecked and consequence-free — until his past finally caught up with him,” said HSI New York Special Agent in Charge Ricky J. Patel. “Children deserve to safely go to school each day without the fear of what evil might be lurking next door.”

Perez was first apprehended by the US Border Patrol in April 2019 after illegally crossing the border near El Paso, Texas. He was given a notice to appear in immigration court and placed in removal proceedings, with a hearing scheduled for February 2026.

He is still in ICE custody pending his removal.

A fugitive tied to MS-13 was hiding near a school when federal officers arrived.
