An Elmwood Place couple was detained after one of the woman’s care was found unresponsive.
On September 13, emergency services were called to Angel Holland’s Helen Street house and her live-in boyfriend, Aaron Stalling, for a child who was not breathing.
The nine-year-old youngster needed to be resuscitated and was transported to the hospital. According to court documents, he was gravely unwell, with a core temperature of less than 80 degrees and a weight of only 30 pounds.
Holland stated that the boy had fallen and complained of a stomachache in recent days, but she did not get him medical attention because she was preoccupied with another child. Stalling also admitted that he heard the boy having problems breathing.
Doctors confirmed the boy’s severe malnutrition, physical abuse, and poor state. His eight- and six-year-old siblings were also malnourished and required hospitalization, according to court documents.
Police carried out a search warrant and seized bungee cords, a belt, and filthy towels.
Holland told police she had been in detention since 2020. Holland and Stalling are each facing three counts of felonious assault and three counts of criminal child endangerment.
Devon Washington and Aliyah Wright were shocked to learn that their neighbors had reportedly abused their children.
“It’s just crazy, like nothing you would expect,” Washington remarked.
Wright stated that she had previously observed police around the home.
“Was there anything we could have done? Was there anything we should have seen that was incorrect, perhaps to help? Police would show up pretty frequently. Fire trucks would show up frequently. Sometimes there are ambulances. So, it’s almost as if we should have noticed that or something,” Wright explained.
She also claimed she had no knowledge there were young children residing in the house.
“I’d sit outside waiting for him to get off work and see a bunch of youngsters go inside with their parents. It would be older kids, maybe around my age, maybe close to twenty. ” I just never saw little kids,” Wright explained.
Local 12 contacted police to discover whether they had previously encountered Holland and Stalling, as well as if they had other children, but have yet to receive a response. On Wednesday, a judge set bond for Stalling and Holland at $600,000.
