Six people are charged with attacking three people near UC’s campus. The victims sustained injuries, two of which were serious.

On September 13, at 1:30 a.m., the victims were walking home after picking up pizza. One of the suspects requested a pizza. Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich says that when the victims refused, one of the suspects smacked one of them in the head. The victim continued going but was struck again and fell unconscious.

While the victim was on the ground, the suspects allegedly kicked and pummeled him, breaking his jaw and inflicting cuts and bruises.

His friend attempted to protect him, but the group also injured him, causing a concussion, dislocating his jaw, puncturing his lip, and inflicting cuts and bruises, according to Pillich. A woman among them sustained a face injury.

Six people have been indicted for felonious assault, aggravated riot, and assault.

They are:

  • Kenneth Bolin, 21, of Corbin, Ky.
  • Austin Smith, 20, of Paris, Ky.
  • Joshua Ansteatt, 18, of Florence
  • Hayley Hornsby, 18, of Cleves
  • Deontae Conyers, 19, of West Price Hill
  • Brayden Hall, 18, of Batavia

Drameco Bennie routinely uses DoorDash in the region.

“It’s not safe at all, like I literally, when I get an order, I’m running to the restaurant and running back to my car looking over my shoulder. Make sure it’s not going to happen to me,” said Bennie. “Broad daylight, nighttime, they don’t care, whenever they come up here stuff happens now, like I said, the main thing is they need more police.”

Local 12 raised Bennie’s concerns with Cincinnati Fraternal Order of Police President Ken Kober.

“I mean, ultimately, what it’s going to take is you have more visibility from the police, you know, and until we hire more people, until we retain more officers, we’re going to have these challenges in our city,” said Kober. “The court needs to send a message to these people that we’re not going to accept this, there’s no place in our society for it and hopefully they go to prison for a long time.”

If convicted, the defendants could face up to 17.5 years in prison for the felony accusations and 180 days in jail for the misdemeanor assault charge.
