A former post commander of the Geneva American Legion wanted for grand larceny was found and apprehended in Pennsylvania. He’s been accused of mailing threatening letters.
Dale Mosher, 62, was charged with second-degree grand larceny following an investigation into the Geneva American Legion’s bank records. The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office declared him “Most Wanted” when he failed to appear in court on September 18.
“Mr. Mosher’s violation of this trust caused tremendous harm to the American Legion community, and they deserve closure so they can move forward,” said Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione.
Authorities obtained a bench warrant for Mosher’s arrest as they sought for him. According to investigators, Mosher spent several days visiting a relative in Tennessee before leaving with the relative’s Jeep, leaving his own automobile behind.
During the inquiry, authorities reported that three victims received threatening letters. Two of the people were witnesses, while the other was a relative. Deputies verified that two people’s lives were in danger while they waited for extradition.
Mosher was spotted and detained on Monday afternoon in Hemlock Township, Pennsylvania, when police said he attempted to enter a Walmart parking lot. He is still in jail at the Columbia County Jail.
Mosher was accused of stealing approximately $100,000 from the Legion’s finances over a six-year period. The suspected theft of the money was revealed in June 2023, when the current commander called authorities and cited discrepancies in bank records dating back nearly a decade.
“Your character is everything, and this individual has absolutely none,” said Commander Anthony Fratto. “If we don’t start stepping up as young Americans, it’s all over.”
Mosher has not been charged in relation to the threatening letters. Deputies suspect he wrote the letters, but they are still investigating them.
