Honolulu, HI — The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Wind Advisory for parts of Maui County and the Big Island, with strong east winds expected to peak overnight. Sustained winds could reach 45 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph possible through 6 a.m. Saturday.
Areas under the advisory include:
– Kahoolawe
– Lanai
– Leeward and windward sections of Maui
– South Haleakala
– Maui Central Valley
– Big Island summits, including Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa
Forecasters caution that wind of this magnitude can peel shingles, snap tree branches, and create hazardous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles. On the Big Island summits, travel may become dangerous for both drivers and hikers, with powerful gusts capable of slamming doors and damaging equipment.
Officials urge residents and visitors to secure loose outdoor items, postpone mountain travel, and prepare for potential overnight power interruptions.
The strong trade winds are forecast to gradually ease by Saturday morning as the pressure gradient relaxes across the islands.
