A Massachusetts son was arraigned for murder Tuesday in Lawrence District Court, the Office of Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker confirms.
On Monday night, just before 10:30 p.m., the Lawrence Police Department received several 911 calls reporting gunfire on Farnham Street in Lawrence. When they arrived, they found 51-year-old Alexis Rodriguez Martinez of Lawrence with several gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead. The deceased man’s son, 26-year-old Elvin Joaquin Rodriguez, was arrested on an outstanding warrant and charged with murder.
He appeared in Lawrence District Court today before Judge Stephen Geary on accusations of murder, carrying a loaded firearm without a licence, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building. He pled not guilty to all allegations, and the judge ordered him held without bail and without prejudice.
Rodriguez is due to appear in court for a probable cause hearing on October 22nd.
Martinez’s acquaintance told the Fall River Reporter that he was an excellent friend, father, and son.
“He loved his boys so much. I am completely stunned, as is everyone who was close to him. His life revolved around his boys. He did everything for his boys. We can’t believe that his kid, whom Dad adored and sacrificed for, did this to him. His kid served in the military, and his father was quite proud of him. I’m not sure why he did this to his dad.”
Breanna Doud, an assistant district attorney, represented the Commonwealth, while Jocelyn Pichardo served as the victim/witness advocate. Chris Norris, an attorney, represented the defendant. The Commonwealth filed a motion to impound records in the case, which Judge Geary granted.
The Lawrence Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit attached to Tucker’s office, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are all investigating the deadly gunshot.
