An Alton man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a February shooting that seriously injured another man.

Chance M. Lyons, 19, of Alton, pleaded guilty on September 30 to a reduced charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony.

He had previously been charged with aggravated violence with a firearm, a Class X felony, as well as two counts of aggravated unauthorized possession of weapons and obstructing justice, both Class 4 felonies.

The firearms and obstruction charges were dropped in exchange for the plea, and Lyons will be given credit for time served in the Madison County Jail.

According to court documents from the time he was charged, Lyons shot another man in the abdomen on February 28, was carrying a .40 caliber handgun in his vehicle without a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification Card or concealed carry permit, and was under the age of 21.

Lyons, according to new court filings filed at the time, was identified as the suspect in the shooting of another man after a quarrel in the 400 block of Cherry.

Witnesses reported that an altercation escalated, and camera footage showed Lyons as the initial physical aggressor. When the victim pushed back, Lyons grabbed his gun and shot him in the abdomen.

Lyons then left, eventually admitting to dropping the gun into the river.
