Villager who drank at country club detained after crashing golf cart at tunnel

A villager who admitted to drinking at a country club has been detained after ramming his golf cart into a tunnel.

Scott David Morgan, 56, of the Village of Belvedere, was detained this week at his house at 2430 Morven Park Way on a warrant for driving under the influence.

According to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the warrant was issued after a blood toxicology sample was returned from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement laboratory, which revealed Morgan had a blood alcohol level of.259/.261 on Oct. 30 when he crashed his EZ-GO golf cart into a light pole after traveling at a high rate of speed through the golf cart tunnel at County Road 101 near Southern Trace Plaza. The golf cart flipped in the crash.

When deputies arrived on the scene, Morgan looked to have been drinking. The Ohio resident was “emotional, crying, and expressing shame.” He admitted that he had drunk wine at Palmer Legends Country Club.

He struggled with field sobriety tests and had difficulty reciting the letters. He was taken to a local hospital for an evaluation of his injuries, and while there, he agreed to have a blood draw. The material was submitted to the FDLE for testing. A criminal history check indicated that he had been convicted of driving under the influence in Ohio in 1999.

He was booked into the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting a $4,000 bond.
