Three teenagers were hospitalized, and an adult was arrested Saturday evening after an officer-involved shooting on the city’s far east side, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
According to police, shortly before 10 p.m., the IMPD’s Violent Crimes Task Force and SWAT squad were following a car driven by people suspected of being involved in a recent shooting.
Police say SWAT officers attempted to “grapple” the vehicle at some point during the chase. Someone inside the car then began shooting at officers, prompting at least one officer to return fire.
The car ultimately came to a stop, and three teenage males and an adult male were apprehended.
Three teens from the vehicle were taken to the hospital, two with gunshot wounds and one with injuries that were not believed to be caused by gunfire. All three are in stable condition; the fourth suspect, an adult guy, was unharmed and taken for questioning.
The IMPD said that at least one department vehicle was damaged by gunfire. A rifle and a handgun were discovered inside the suspect automobile.
The IMPD stated that they do not believe anyone was wounded in the event. There is no current threat to the public.
Tenth Street is closed between German Church Road and Washington Point Drive while police investigate the scene. IMPD is advising people to avoid the area since officers will be on the scene for several hours trying to determine what happened.
According to police, the cop who shot his gun was carrying a body camera, which was activated.
The criminal investigation is being led by the Indianapolis Police Department’s Critical Incident Response Team. IMPD Internal Affairs is conducting a separate administrative investigation. As is customary in officer-related shootings, the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave.
Following the criminal investigation, the civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandated hearing on the attempted use of lethal force.
Anyone with information should contact Sgt. Michael Duke at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477), to remain anonymous.
