Two shootings near the University of Chicago occurred within an hour of each other on Wednesday, killing one man and badly injuring another, with multiple suspects still at large, according to authorities.
The first gunfire happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. in the 6200 block of South Drexel Avenue, according to Chicago police.
Two male suspects approached a 29-year-old man seated in a car in a white Mercedes. An argument erupted, and one of the suspects pulled out a gun and opened fire, authorities said.
The man was struck in the chest and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. Authorities later proclaimed him deceased. No other injuries were reported.
About an hour later, another shooting was reported in the 5300 block of South Kenwood Avenue.
According to police, a male suspect driving a Toyota Corolla approached a 30-year-old guy strolling down an alley. The suspect took out a gun and shot the victim in the chest and twice in the wrist.
The victim was sent to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. No other injuries were reported.
The victim killed in the South Drexel incident has yet to be named.
Police have not confirmed if the two shootings are related, and information about the suspects is sparse.
There have been no arrests in any case. Police say investigations are ongoing.
