An 18-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the shooting of an Uber driver in Cleveland.
Police say officers took the suspect into custody on Wednesday night and recovered a firearm.
3News Investigates reports that the suspect, identified as DeAndre Griggs of Garfield Heights, has been charged with felonious assault in Cleveland Municipal Court.
CASE DETAILS
Officers from Cleveland’s Fourth District responded to a report of a man being shot at 10:28 p.m. in the 3400 block of East 147th Street.
When officers arrived, they found the victim with a gunshot wound. Police say officers immediately provided first aid until Cleveland EMS arrived. Paramedics then transported the victim to a hospital for treatment.
According to police, early information suggests the suspect took the victim’s vehicle during the incident. Authorities say they recovered the vehicle shortly afterward.
According to a Cleveland police report, an officer saw a notification on the victim’s phone from Uber that read, “your pickup location is ahead,” near East 146th Street and Spear Avenue.
A witness told police she heard a “loud bang outside her residence,” which prompted her to look out her living room window. She said she saw the victim “stumbling to her front porch and sitting down.”
Another witness gave police video of the incident. Officers said the footage shows a pickup truck traveling northbound on East 146th Street from Kinsman Road and stopping at the intersection of East 146th Street and Spear Avenue at around 10:16 p.m.
Police said a man got out of the pickup truck, walked behind it, and then moved toward the driver’s side.
After a brief pause of about 10 seconds, the man came back into view from the driver’s side, appearing to hold his face. Police said he then began stumbling toward a home on East 146th Street, where he collapsed on the front porch stairwell.
The Cleveland Division of Police says it is working with Uber as part of its investigation into the case.
Uber statement: “This horrific act of violence is disturbing. Our thoughts are with the driver, and we’re working to get in touch with them. We’ve been in contact with police and will continue to do whatever we can to support their investigation.”
