Driver sentenced to 4 years in prison for fatally striking elderly Ocala man pushing shopping cart on SR 200

A woman who was found guilty of fatally striking an elderly Ocala man who was pushing a shopping cart across State Road 200 before fleeing the scene has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Marion County Circuit Judge Timothy McCourt sentenced Somer Lynn Fox, 33, to four years in jail, ten years probation, and 200 hours of community service in connection with last year’s deadly accident that killed 76-year-old Albert Mobbs.

Fox, who did not enter a plea, was found guilty of failing to offer aid and leaving the scene of a fatal crash, which carries a minimum term of four years and a maximum of thirty.

The sentencing comes just under seven months after Mobbs was killed while pulling a shopping cart near the intersection of SR 200 and SW 60th Street in Ocala.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, Mobbs was moving his shopping cart across the westbound lanes of SR 200 on September 23, 2025, when he was hit by a vehicle driven by Fox.

Following the crash, Fox drove to her current workplace, Swampy’s Bar and Grille, located at 19773 E Pennsylvania Avenue in Dunnellon.

A passenger in Fox’s vehicle, who allegedly begged her to pull over, reported the event to authorities after hearing on the news that the pedestrian had died.

In the original arrest report, law enforcement officials observed that the passenger said that Fox did not stop the vehicle because the individuals, who were Swampy’s coworkers, had been drinking together and Fox was frightened that she would receive a “DUI.”

During an appearance with Fox two days later, she acknowledged to hitting the pedestrian. According to the police record, she said she left the scene because she was “freaking out.”

Fox was arrested on September 25, 2025, and charged with failure to stop at a fatal crash. He was given a $25,000 bond. She bonded out the next day, September 26, 2025.

Fox was brought into custody on Thursday, April 23, following her sentencing hearing and will begin serving her four-year sentence.

According to his obituary, Mobbs ran a tow truck company and was a racing icon at Illinois’ Kanakee Speedway, where he finished in the top 100. According to the speedway’s records, Mobbs’ 14 race wins tie him for the 73rd most. He was also a part of the racetrack’s Two Crown Club.
