A former lawyer from Rockville has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for three fraud schemes totaling $4.2 million in losses with 21 victims, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO).
Sari Kurland, 65, has also been ordered to pay the money back as compensation.
She pled guilty in January to one count of theft in a $100,000 conspiracy and 15 counts of fiduciary theft, according to MCSAO.
According to online sources, she owned Kurland Law Group and had a Rockville office, which has since closed.
Her her license remained valid in Maryland until January 2024, according to the state attorney’s office.
“This defendant had a position of trust as both an attorney and a fiduciary. She abused that trust and her professional responsibilities by mismanaging millions of dollars entrusted to her by customers and investors. “We applaud the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission and the State’s Attorney’s Office Special Prosecutions Division for their thorough investigation and dedication to holding the defendant accountable,” said Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy in a statement.
According to MCSAO, Kurland led the theft and misappropriation of funds schemes from May 2022 to September 2024.
In the first plan, she sought financing to aid what prosecutors described as a “so-called Middle Eastern petroleum deal” involving 18 victims in total, according to the state’s attorney’s office. The second fraud involves “cryptocurrency transactions” between two victims. The third scam comprised compensation negotiations for COVID-19 business issues and had one known victim.
